Overview & Turnover Philosophy

Exline Post

Welcome to the Online & Conform section of the Exline Post wiki. This guide covers everything you need to know when turning over a locked picture edit for online, conform, color, and finishing.

Who This Is For

  • Editors locking picture and preparing a turnover package
  • Assistant editors managing media, tracks, and exports
  • Producers reviewing deliverables and schedules
  • VFX and graphics teams preparing final renders for integration

Why Preparation Matters

A clean turnover saves time, reduces revisions, and preserves creative intent from the edit through the grade to final delivery. A messy turnover can add days of conform time chasing missing media, rebuilding effects, and hunting down the correct camera angle in a committed multicam.

The guidelines here are the result of real lessons from real shows. Following them is the fastest path from locked cut to delivered master.

How This Wiki Is Organized

This section is broken into focused, single-purpose pages so you can jump to exactly what you need.

Preparation

  1. Project Setup & Media Management — getting your project organized before export
  2. Track Layout — the preferred V1–V7 / A1–A5 structure for documentary turnovers
  3. Committing Multicam Sequences — Avid, Premiere, FCP, Resolve
  4. Effects, Titles & VFX — what comes across, what doesn’t
  5. Markers — color legend and export per NLE
  6. Sequence Formatting — bars, tone, slate, leader, 2-pop, tail pop

Export & Delivery

  1. Reference QuickTime & Burn-Ins — how to build a clean reference
  2. Exporting for Resolve — XML, AAF, FCPXML, EDL, handles
  3. Delivery — folder structure, file naming, transfer methods

Reference

  1. Troubleshooting & FAQ — common issues and fixes
  2. Final Delivery Checklist — the master checklist
  3. Codec & Spec Reference — delivery codec matrix, frame rates, audio levels
  4. Glossary — terms and acronyms

Core Principles

These five principles inform every recommendation in this guide:

PrincipleWhat It Means
SimplifyFewer tracks, fewer effects baked weird — clearer turnovers conform faster
Label everythingClips, tracks, markers, files. If it has a name, make it a clear one
Commit what needs committingMulticams, complex time warps, compound clips
CommunicateMarkers in the timeline, notes in the email, a call if something is unusual
Double-check before sendingThe final checklist exists for a reason

Questions?

If anything in this guide is unclear, or your project has unusual requirements not covered here, contact Exline Post before you export. A five-minute conversation up front can save hours of conform work later.
